Southern Water consolidates condition-monitoring alerts into single control-room view

A new initiative at Southern Water is bringing expert-validated alerts from Samotics into Skewb's single-pane-of-glass environment, giving control-room operators a clearer view of asset health.

The collaboration connects Samotics' SAM4 platform, which monitors pump and motor health using electrical signature analysis (ESA), to Skewb's Vantage situational awareness environment through open APIs. Now running in Southern Water's control room, it allows SAM4's asset-health alerts to sit alongside other operational data, so teams can cross-reference and verify them without moving between systems.

This comes as many water utilities draw condition and operational data from a growing number of separate systems, requiring control rooms to piece those signals together to get the complete picture needed to act with confidence. For these teams, that can mean checking several platforms by hand, stretching operational resources and slowing response times.

Skewb's intelligence and visualisation platform brings together isolated data streams into a single interface, giving control-room operators the context they need to validate alerts, understand changes to dynamic risk levels, and provide them with the capability to make faster, better-informed decisions.

“The water industry has lived with a fragmented landscape of disconnected systems for a long time, and it can slow operators down at the very moment they need to act.”

“Bringing Samotics' ESA insight into our single-pane-of-glass environment moves things on: operators can prioritise pump and motor health alerts using real operational context, from work histories to environmental risk, and the outcomes are captured automatically in a closed loop. We believe this collaborative and integrated approach reflects how utility control rooms will evolve to work in future.”

Bob Collington OBE, Strategic Advisor at Skewb

SAM4 uses ESA to monitor pumps and motors remotely from the motor control cabinet, with AI analysing the current and voltage they draw to identify developing faults, often weeks before they would otherwise become visible. Crucially, every SAM4 alert is then reviewed and validated by Samotics' expert ESA analysts before it reaches the customer.

Bringing that insight into Skewb's environment gives control-room teams an added layer of confidence, letting operators check a SAM4 alert against a site's work history, telemetry, previous events and other operational data. That context helps teams to triage and prioritise work more quickly.

“Water companies already rely on SAM4 to keep watch over thousands of pumps and motors, and the teams reading those alerts are busier than ever. That's exactly why we validate every alert with our own ESA analysts before it reaches a customer, so operators are acting on a signal they can trust rather than working through a stream of automated notifications themselves.”

“Bringing those trusted alerts into a single view with Skewb and Southern Water, and closing the loop back to maintenance, is our way of helping to tackle a challenge every control room in the sector will recognise.”

Tom Swain, Global Head of Water at Samotics

Samotics is installed on more than 2,800 of Southern Water's assets across wastewater and clean-water sites in southern England, and has delivered more than £32 million in confirmed benefits to date.

Through the partnership, Southern Water's operations teams now have ready access to real-time, contextualised asset-health insights, particularly supporting the work of newly established desks in the utility's control room: Containment (post-event mitigation) and Intensive Care (high-risk asset oversight).

“This collaboration demonstrates the value of integrating proven technologies rather than creating yet another standalone system.”

“By bringing expert-validated asset-health insights into a single operational environment, we're enabling faster decision-making, improving visibility of risk and strengthening our ability to protect the environment. It's a practical example of how data, technology and operational expertise can come together to drive better outcomes for customers, regulators and the communities we serve.”

Austin Phillips, Programme Manager, Pollution Task Force at Southern Water

The proof of concept is live within Southern Water's Skewb environment, with wider deployment and development planned.

Connecting SAM4 to the systems a customer already runs is familiar territory for Samotics. Its validated insight is designed to feed into a range of operational and asset-management systems through SAM4's open APIs, and the collaboration with Skewb is the latest example of that insight reaching operators where they already make their decisions.

The collaboration builds on recent work between Samotics and Southern Water on burst rising mains, with the utility supporting development by giving Samotics access to years of real-world, historical data to train the new model. Since it was announced in July 2026, the capability has already flagged multiple verified bursts, helping operators respond faster to failures that are notoriously hard to detect and potentially damaging.

The agreement also covers any further expansion across DCWW’s asset base in the coming three years, as the company continues to extend predictive monitoring across its wastewater operations.
